Buying Guide For Best Longboards For Downhill

1. Choosing Deck style

The deck of the longboard is something to look into when buying a downhill longboard. Your riding style is also a consideration when choosing the deck style. This signifies that there are plenty of different types of longboard deck styles out there.

We will go through drop-through and top-mount.

(i)Drop-Through Style

Most people highly recommend the drop-through board. The significant difference it has to the standard skateboard is the cut-out in the deck.

However, this cutout enables perfect truck fitting, making the board more stable. It is ideal for high-speed free riding as it offers stability. The drop longboard deck is easily controllable, and it is flexible too.

They are, however, limited instability and turning ability due to drifting tendencies of the board.

(ii)Top Mount

When it comes to top mount longboards, they vary from the drop trough due to the trucks’ mounting style. The trucks’ positioning is directly at the bottom of the board. This mechanism allows for the quick turning of the board by the rider. Therefore, for aggressive riders, the top mount is perfect.

However, truck positioning increases the body’s height at the expense of stability, thereby increasing wobbling chances. They are suitable for seasonal riders, and other mechanisms such as bushings and wheel pimping will help with balance.

2. Choosing Trucks

As highlighted above, trucks have a crucial role in the overall performance of the board you want.

Worry not!

This section will help you choose trucks for your longboard with the essential aspects you should consider.

(i) Reverse kingpin trucks

First of you should know there are two types of designs: the traditional kingpin design and the reverse kingpin. We will take a dapper look at the reverse kingpin.

It is considered the best. The design gives the rider high-speed stability and smoothness, while turning is also highly responsive.

They, however, come with extra ride height as compared to the traditional kingpin design.

(ii) Baseplate Angle

The base-plate angle of your board’s trucks is often decisive to the overall feel of the ride. They usually come in two variations, which are the 40-degree and the 50-degree angles. The 40 degree is excellent for free-riding and downhill riding due to the allowance for more leaning in the rider.

They guarantee a secure feel and good deck leverage to the rider. The 50 degree offers more turn to the rider at the expense of lean than the 40.

They feel more responsive and are suitable for cruising, carving dancing, and downhill too.

(iii) Hangers

When it comes to hangers, the width is most important. If it’s wider, it shows its stability. Also, they are more favorable to high speeds despite the sacrifice to the grip of the trucks. The narrower hangers offer more grip and less stability.

They are maneuverable and nimbler than the wide ones. The recommended width is 180mm, and it gives you the best of both grip and durability. They allow you to turn responsively as well as giving you a grip.

(iv) Width

The axel width is another important consideration. They should not worry you much due to limits in the changes. However, you should note that two variations, the recently popular 10mm, and the 8mm.

3. Choosing wheels

Wheels are the most important component for downhill longboarding. Your board will hover over wheels and go downhill. You need wheels that are not so big in diameter and not slippery. Below are the things you need to consider while choosing wheels for downhill longboarding.

(i) Wheels Diameter

First of the recommended diameter for wheels ranges from 70-75 mm as it has a lesser risk of wearing out too quickly as in the case of smaller wheels. It also reduces the chances of wheel bites, which are more common in larger wheels.

 (ii)Durometer

The measure of the softness of the urethane in the wheel is the durometer. Soft wheels have a better grip and favorable for longboard downhill. The recommended is 80a for ordinary people. Heavier riders should get around 83a, depending on your feelings.

(iii)Lip Profile

A sharp-lipped wheel is the best you should get. This is because the sharp-lipped wheel will allow you to slide simultaneously with an excellent grip ability.

(iv) Wheels Width

The recommended wheel width ranges between 50mm and 60mm. A wheel this wide will give you extra grip around the corners. A wheel too wide will provide you with difficulties in sliding out when losing speed.

4. Choosing Bearing

When selecting a bearing, an ideal option is going for the inexpensive bearing, which can also be durable at the same time. Therefore, you should get the bearing with an integrated spacer. Spacers help by preserving the life of your bearings by reducing damages of sliding sideways.

5. Wearing Safety Gears

Downhill longboard riding involves excellent speed and can sometimes result in the body suffering stress.

Therefore, I will help you protect yourself by going through the safety gear that you need.

(i)Helmet

Any type of headgear is better than not having one at all. However, getting yourself a certified CPSC helmet is good practice, as some states require it. Getting the Predator DH-6 and the 187 Pro Skate helmet are recommendations you should check out.

(ii) Gloves

The gloves should be very firm gloves along with Derlin Plastics or UHMW from the best quality brands. These are perfect for high-speed sliding so that the hands are kept protected.

(iii) Kneepads

At most, when one falls, either knees or hands suffer the fall leaving bruises or more. To protect them from a fall, professionals need to have sturdy pads for knees and elbows too.

(iv) Longboard shoes

You need to wear longboard dedicated shoes for better traction and also to protect your feet from any kind of injuries. There are many types of shoes athletes wear. But as you are definitely a longboarder (Guess how I know!), you need a special type.

Generally, longboarders like vulcanized shoes. Some also wear cupsoles. Most of the longboarder like flexible cushioning mid-top shoes like Converse Chuck Tailor shoe but everyone has a unique comfort level and choice, you will have one definitely.

5. Is a Longboard Safer than a Skateboard?

Answer: Since longboards are meant for cruising and transportation, they are generally designed to be much safer compared to skateboards. You have the option of performing tricks with a longboard but it is somehow not its main purpose.
